The Family International Cambodia

Overviewof our work in Cambodia

Volunteer members of the Family International invest their time and energy to provide physical assistance and moral encouragement to Cambodian people at all levels of society. We invest particularly in Cambodia's children and youth, including those who are underprivileged, abandoned, or otherwise disadvantaged. Our goal is to provide hands-on vocational and character-building training, educational programs, and scholarship opportunities. We also channel donated goods and supplies to poor and needy families and institutions, and have coordinated several development projects.

Another priority of our work is the translation of educational and motivational literature and audio/visual materials, including leadership training and Christian study courses. We are honored to offer our time and efforts to benefit the people of Cambodia, and to assist in some of the many projects to improve, rebuild, and develop the nation.

Project Highlights

Resettlement Village Project | A large resettlement village outside of Phnom Penh is home to hundreds of displaced families. Most of these people were living in abject poverty as squatters in the capital city, many having migrated from the provinces due to drought and crop failure. They have now been relocated to new village communities. We've coordinated and arranged the delivery of several tons of donated food, clothing, shoes, toys, school supplies, and household items to the poorest families. Stories & articles | Photo album

Child Protection Shelter | Family International volunteers have worked closely for the past three years with a child protection shelter that is home to 35 children, mostly girls, between the ages of 5 and 17, who have been rescued from abusive situations or sexual exploitation. We've donated five computer set ups, a set of children's educational videos, and other school equipment. We've also painted bright murals on the garden wall and coordinated the construction of a second story for the shelter to provide bedrooms for the children and staff, a study room, recreation room, and toilets. The new rooms have enabled us to set up an English classroom and an IT room where the girls receive daily language and computer classes. Stories & articles | Photo album

Rural School Assistance | We regularly visit a large public primary school for children from impoverished families in the province of Siem Riep, bringing school supplies, food, clothing, and other necessities. We've been able to build a teacher's room, a lavatory for the students, we've sponsored the salary for two English teachers, and hosted an English camp for 100 students, which included five different workshops. In partnership with sponsors, we've also set up a computer lab with 20 computers, as well as furnished electricity, desks, and educational materials for the students. At the end of 2007, thanks to a generous donation, we organized the removal of a dilapidated school building and replaced it with a new brick structure that will accommodate three classrooms.

Scholarship Programs | In Phnom Penh, we've maintained scholarships for six abandoned children to attend an International School and arranged daily transportation for an 11-year-old girl from the child protection shelter to attend a special school for the deaf and mute. In Siem Riep, we're also providing tuition for another 11-year-old girl to attend a special school for the deaf, along with sponsoring six poor students at a local primary school.

Children's Book Project | There are few Khmer (the language of Cambodia) children's books available in schools, libraries, or book shops. So, in cooperation with the Japan branch of the Family International, we translated and printed a full-color illustrated children's inspirational story book in Khmer and English. Five thousand copies were distributed free to children at schools, institutions, and hospitals in Phnom Penh and in the provinces of Kampong Thom, Kampong Cham, and Siem Riep. We also performed a motivational drama depicting the book's story, along with a clown show and a magic show.
